People are talking about the amazing effects of coconut oil which it is often labelled as a “superfood”.

The unique combination of fatty acids in coconut oil can have positive effects on your health. Here are some of them.

Weight Loss and Cholesterol

Many people believe that when it comes to weight loss, it’s all about the amount of calories you eat. However, the source of your calories is an equally important variable.  There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL), known as “good cholesterol”, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad cholesterol”. HDL appears to help reduce levels of LDL, and high levels of HDL may help boost cardiovascular health.

Studies are varied, some point out that medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a component in coconut oil, may help boost levels of good cholesterol however, this a highly debated topic and there are studies with opposite findings.

On the other hand an animal study has shown that mice pups whose mothers were fed virgin coconut oil had a significant lower body weight to those pups with a standard diet, virgin coconut oil modifies the fatty acid profiles of the standard diet by inducing high levels of medium chain fatty acids with low levels of essential fatty acids.

Anti Microbial Properties

About half of the fatty acids in coconut oil are Lauric acids, a study has shown that certain fatty acids contain Microbial properties, helping you fight off against bacteria and other germs. Out of all the fatty acids that were tested for their microbial properties, Lauric acids showed they were broadly inhibitory for the bacteria.

Natural Deodorant

Coconut oil is a wonderful product to use as a base for deodorant because it kills fungi, yeast and bacteria. Baking soda also helps to neutralize odor.

Hair Skin & Teeth

Coconut Oil can not only be used as a health remedy but also as a beauty and hygiene product. Many people use coconut oil for its cosmetic properties to enhance the skin and hair. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer for the and has shown to be a light protector against UV rays, it can even be used as a Chapstick for your lips.

Coconut oil can also help oral hygiene through a process called oil pulling, it involves swishing coconut oil around your mouth as if it was mouth-wash, thanks to its microbial properties it can help eliminate the bacteria and combat bad breath.

Coconut oil can be a great tool to help fight the aging process, research on the effectiveness of certain oils on oxidative stability have shown high potential. This is thanks to the high contents of saturated fatty acids such as Lauric, Myristic, and Palmitic acids found in coconut oil.
