Funguses are everywhere, they’re around us, on us and even in us. You shouldn’t be weirded out by this fact, most of the time these fungus are harmless and necessary for our health. However when fungal infections start forming and affecting your health that’s when it becomes an issue.

There are many types of fungal infections that result from different ways of the fungi entering the body.

Aspergillus fungi is a fungus that can be inhaled and can cause fever, cough and wheezing. In extreme cases the fungal infection can spread to vital organs such as the brain or bones.

Cryptococcus neoformans can be found in the soil or bird feces. This fungus also enters through the airways and can cause lung infection which can lead to a cough and or chest pains.

Eumycetoma is a rarer fungus, it can be found in the soil or in the water and the fungi enters the body through a break in the skin often on a person’s foot. The resulting infection causes firm, usually painless but debilitating masses under the skin that can eventually affect the underlying bone.

Candida Albicans 

Yeast which is also known as candida, is a type of fungus that all humans have in small amounts they’re harmless.

However if the growth of yeast increases drastically it can have severe effects on the body. When the body is healthy, it keeps yeast under control by using healthy bacteria that is naturally found in the body. However antibiotics and the things we eat could cause an imbalance within our body that can affect the healthy bacteria in our body. Antibiotics are non selective therefore, they can weaken the friendly bacteria that help keep yeast in check

Yeast growth often goes undetected, yeast thrives off sugars, carbohydrates, fermented foods and vinegar. Feelings of craving towards any of these can be symptoms of a yeast overgrowth. Elevated levels of yeast can release toxins into your bloodstream that are dangerous for your health.

Here’s a way you can test if you have an elevated level of yeast;

Spit Test

Yeah, it sounds gross but it’s a good way to see what is happening inside your body. It is best to do this in the morning as you get out of bed.

  • Gather as much spit as possible in your mouth.
  • Spit into a clear glass with room temperature filtered water.
  • Examine water.

The saliva will first float, look to see if there are any thin projections going downward into the water within 15 minutes. They can look like strings or hair, if you see this you may have a candida overgrowth 

If your saliva is very cloudy and sinks to the bottom within a few minutes, or parts of the saliva slowly sink, yeast overgrowth is a possibility. The particles are yeast colonies which band together.

If your spit is still floating after about an hour, it is likely that your yeast is under control.

The domino effect

Candida is linked to serious health problems, once the fungus becomes settled within the body the host’s general health tends to decrease. Cravings for sugar and other foods that nourish the yeast become stronger and then the cycle will continue.

At some point the immune system is weakened so much that the symptoms are no longer tolerable. Often doctors will prescribe antibiotics to treat the symptoms however antibiotics may harm the healthy bacteria that keep yeast at bay.

Natural Remedies for Fungus Overgrowth

The best way to address the problem is to adjust your diet; ditch all processed foods and sugars, drink water instead of sugary drinks. The following foods can help the body heal and encourage healthy bacteria growth.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil contains strong antifungal properties, which will kill the bacteria you don’t want and aid the immune system. A good way to incorporate coconut oil into your diet is to replace other cooking oils for coconut oil, you can also add coconut oil to your coffee or any other foods. 


Garlic can detoxify the liver and aid the digestion process. It also contains antifungal attributes, eliminating bad bacteria and promoting the growth of good bacteria. Add garlic to any meal, you can even chew on raw cloves. Note raw garlic is superior in efficacy


It may not look too appetizing but seaweed is dense in nutrients that can help you fight yeast overgrowth. In addition seaweed is a powerful detoxifier, helping you flush out all the toxins your body does not need whilst cleaning your digestive tract. 


Ginger is another powerful cleanser that can help you detoxify waste from your liver in addition ginger can help increase circulation while aiding the immune system.
